Your First Tattoo: How to Choose the Design and Placement

The two decisions that cause the most regret
Ask tattoo artists what first-timers get wrong and you'll hear the same two answers: placement chosen without thinking about work and daily life, and size chosen out of fear. Both are fixable before the appointment.
On placement: decide how visible you want the tattoo to be on a normal day. Forearms and hands are on display in most jobs; upper arms, shoulders, chest and thighs stay private until you choose otherwise. Preview the design on photos of both a visible and a coverable spot and notice how differently you feel about each.
On size: tiny first tattoos feel safe, but fine detail blurs as ink ages, and a design that's too small for its placement can look like an afterthought. Preview the piece at the size your artist would actually recommend — you'll usually find the bigger version looks more deliberate.
A sane process for your first piece
Collect, then wait. Save designs that grab you — flash, styles, symbols with meaning. Sit on the shortlist for a few weeks; keep what survives.
Preview everything. Put each surviving design on photos of two or three placements. Delete the combinations that don't work. This usually leaves one or two obvious winners.
Live with the winner. Keep the preview photo on your phone for another week or two. Still excited? That's the one.
Brief your artist with the preview. A photo of the design already placed and sized on your body is the clearest brief an artist can get — they'll refine it from there.
